For instance, Liverpool and Everton, or Manchester United and Manchester City, generally won't play at home on the same weekend. This avoids overwhelming local police resources and transport infrastructure. London, with its abundance of top-flight clubs, has more flexibility due to its sheer size and infrastructure.
• Club Requests: Clubs can also make specific requests. A prime example: Old Trafford will host the Super League Grand Final on Saturday, 11 October 2025. This means Manchester United will almost certainly request an away fixture that weekend to avoid a stadium clash.
• The Pairing Grid: Clubs are then placed into a "pairing grid" which dictates when they'll be at home and when they'll be away.
• Random Generation & Verification: From this grid, the system generates a randomized set of fixtures. This initial list is then rigorously checked by Atos staff, alongside representatives from both the Premier League and Football League. If any issues or conflicts arise, the process is repeated until a satisfactory, compliant fixture list is born!

The Golden Rules of Home & Away Scheduling

To ensure fairness and logistical sense, the fixture generator must adhere to three core home and away rules:

1. Rotation Rule: Over any five-match period, a club must have either three home games and two away, or vice versa.
2. Season Start/End: No club can begin or conclude the season with two consecutive home or two consecutive away matches.
3. Festive Period Balance: Around the busy Boxing Day and New Year's Day period, clubs cannot play two home games or two away games in a row. This helps distribute travel burdens during the holidays.
